About M.A Mbita Academy
Who We Are
M.A Mbita Academy is a primary day and boarding school located in Mbita, Homa Bay County, Kenya. It was established in the year 1991 by the Founding Directors Mr Yona Maina and Mrs. Emelda A. Maina, a couple with a teaching background who wanted to provide quality education to the children of the region. The school is registered with the Ministry of education under the category of Basic education and is fully compliant with the ministry’s requirements. We offer both 8-4-4 system and the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). The school has a total enrolment of 277 students, who are taught by qualified and experienced teachers. The school also has a parent teacher association (PTA) and a board of governors (BOG) that oversee the management and development of the school. The school participates in various co-curricular activities, such as games, clubs and sports. The school has a reputation for producing excellent results in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations, which are taken by students at the end of their primary education. Currently, we have established a Junior School in line with the Kenyan Curriculum reforms.
Our History
The school opened in 9th January, 1991 as a private nursery school. This resulted from a gap seen by a married couple (both teachers) to establish a center of quality education in the greater Suba District. When the doors opened, an overwhelming number of 97 pupils formed the pioneer class. This was like a dream come true to the community and also an assuring confidence that they had in the founding directors. The pioneer class sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 1999, and the school emerged at the top in the Suba District standings with a mean score of 420 marks. The leading candidate in the school had 592 out of a possible 700 marks and was subsequently ranked the second best in Nyanza province. Nationally the school was ranked 5th in Kenya and the best in Nyanza province flooring the previous giants. The candidate with the lowest marks in the same examination obtained 302 marks, a remarkable performance amongst the local schools.
This performance in national examinations has been repeated year after year since then. This is a manifestation of the quality of teaching staff, a dedicated administration, and the exceptional pupils that join the school each year. For the past 32 years, Mbita Academy has remained amongst the top performing school in the Suba North Constituency. Mbita Academy has cut a niche for itself and is now a beacon of academic excellence in the region and the country as a whole.
The school has now opened a Junior School in line with the Ministry of Education change of curriculum to CBC (competency based curriculum) away from the previous 8-4-4 Curriculum.
Our story is one of ambition, hard work, discipline, and a relentless desire to excel.
